What Vibe Coding Actually Means
Vibe coding describes building software by describing what you want in ordinary language and letting an AI coding tool generate the code, instead of typing it line by line. The term spread through developer communities in early 2025, carrying the sense of caring about the result rather than the code.
The easy misreading is that the human work disappears. It does not. Deciding what to build, checking whether the output is correct, and connecting it to real operations are still human jobs. What changed is the time spent typing code, not the time spent making decisions. That distinction is the point of this article.
What Did Change: Small Programs Got Cheaper
The clearest shift is in build time for simple, repetitive work — automating a recurring spreadsheet task, pulling a fixed set of data off the web, a plain create/read/update/delete screen. Work where the rules are obvious and the shape is standard. None of it was hard before; it simply takes noticeably less time now.
Less time means a lower price, and the real consequence is this: small jobs that used to die at the quote stage are now worth commissioning.
Every project carries a floor of effort regardless of size — taking the request, understanding it, setting up, handing over. That floor is why a piece of automation that "should take half a day" often came back with an uncomfortable quote, and why clients shrugged and kept doing the task by hand. AI-assisted coding lowered the floor, and those awkwardly small jobs dropped into a range where outsourcing makes sense.
What Did Not Change: Still Human Work
Honestly: "AI does all of it" is marketing. Code generation got faster. Everything on either side of it did not.
Requirements and design: what to build, why, and under which rules is a human decision. Give an AI a vague instruction and it will produce something vague that looks plausible.
Verification and QA: AI is confidently wrong. Code can look like it runs and quietly misbehave on edge cases, which makes checking more important than before, not less.
Integration and maintenance: connecting to existing systems, deploying, and fixing things later cost what they always cost.
So complex systems where reliability matters still carry real effort. Settlement and payment logic where a mistake moves money, multi-tier permissions, heavy traffic, security-sensitive work — the code may come out faster, but design and verification dominate the total, so the price barely moves. Sometimes verification takes longer than it used to.
Where Costs Drop and Where They Do Not

In one line: the clearer the rules and the easier the verification, the more the price falls; the more judgment and exceptions involved, and the worse the consequences of being wrong, the less it moves. Not "everything is half price in the AI era" — find your own project in the table first.
A Vendor Says AI Makes Them Faster. Three Things to Check
Every vendor says it now. To find out whether that speed came back to you as a lower price, ask three questions.
1. Scope — ask them to separate what AI genuinely accelerated from what it did not. Standard screens get faster; implementing the rules specific to your business still takes a person. "All of it got faster" is a bad answer.
2. Verification — ask whether testing and QA are inside the quote, and how they catch AI-generated code that is wrong. Generation got faster, which made verification more important; a quote that looks cheap because this step was removed is the most expensive kind.
3. Maintenance — ask who fixes things, for how long, on what terms, and whether source code ownership transfers to you. If AI features are part of the product, ask whether monthly API usage fees are billed on top.
A vendor who talks about being cheap because of AI while staying vague about verification and maintenance has not removed the cost. They have deferred it.
